Frank the Giraffe × Wilshire Branch Library Teen Council

Artist Fabrice Guerrier joined the Wilshire Branch Library Teen Council for an afternoon salon and painting session anchored by Frank the Giraffe.

Students opened with a structured discussion about the futures they wanted to see — their fears, their hopes, and the worlds they were already imagining. The conversation moved through themes of personal transformation, collective possibility, and speculative thinking.

From there the afternoon shifted into an art session. Participants painted Frank the Giraffe, using his elevated perspective as a creative lens to explore future worlds and possibilities.

Field Notes from Fabrice:

I entered the space to witness the next generation as they moved and lived under the age of collapse — when all that we have known in the past might no longer be what is useful to make sense of what’s to come. Frank the Giraffe was there, and he had a lot to say. Those laughters and giggles.

Those cultural references. The one who proclaimed, at such a young age, that they were anti-capitalism. The one whose deep frustration and anger was quietly, visibly brewing. Those looks. Those stares — eyes full of wonder, full of magic — having, perhaps for the first time, the space to dream about what the future holds for them. Their inner resources, their creative powers, were irrevocably activated in that room.

They were the future of Los Angeles. Not yet grown and already seeking — moving within an unknown that no textbook had prepared them for. Frank the Giraffe bore witness. And within their own self-expression they were taught to see that there are many worlds possible. That there is opportunity and space for deep joy, for deep aliveness.

During the workshop I watched the young generate a kind of aliveness that I profoundly felt was necessary — for dreaming is how we carry the legacies of our fallen and broken past forward into something worth inheriting. That was true.

Frank the Giraffe was the portal through which they traveled to the future and back. And in that room, something budded. Something began to flower.
