LOS ANGELES, CA — MAY 20th, 2024 — Syllble Books is thrilled to announce the release of the groundbreaking novella, “Blacktopia: Royal House Cat,” by the talented author Bairton Brown, member of the Blacktopia Collective at Syllble. Set at the dawn of the 22nd century on Planet Earth, this novella explores a world reshaped by climate change and societal collapse, where diverse communities strive to build new ways of existence.
“Blacktopia: Royal House Cat” transports readers to the year 2095, a time when rising ocean levels have forced humanity to reimagine civilization. Amid this upheaval, competing demographics race to create alternative societies, both on and off the planet. The novella focuses on an underwater utopia known as Blacktopia, a thriving society cultivated by Black refugees seeking a better life.
About the Author:
Bairton Brown (he/they) is a revolutionary artist and educator from Ann Arbor, MI, now thriving in Burbank. An alumnus of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts with an MA in Arts and Public Policy, and a BFA in Directing from DePaul University, Bairton has directed the series ‘Naomi and Levi Take On The World’ and the sold-out premiere of “HOW DARE YOU.” Their short film “THICKER THAN OIL” won best production design at the 2022 Paper Crowns Film Fest. As a Next-Up Playwriting Fellow at Congo Square Theatre Company, they wrote and directed “THE PLAY GROUNDS.” Bairton’s first novel, BLACKTOPIA, will be published in 2024. They also contribute to Congo Square’s Industry Training Institute, Internship programs, and Apprenticeships, enriching the lives of emerging artists.
